It's time to make up a bunch of awards and hand them out to the most deserving people, places and things in the real estate, architecture and neighborhood universes of New York City! Yep, it's time for the 13th Annual Curbed Awards! Up now: the most over-the-top amenities developers offered residents this year.
With New York City’s luxury market taking a hit this year, developers had to put in extra work to entice residents to choose their pricey projects over all the others. What better way to do just that than to pull out all the stops with amenities? So here it is, a look at nine of the most outrageous amenities that developers incorporated into their projects this year.
When we outlined this list of most outrageous amenities in 2015, we thought that nothing could get more ridiculous than the private jet service being offered to residents of 111 Murray for a cool $125,000 a day. But no—luxury yacht service has come onto the scene. Residents of 1 Seaport, Fortis’s 60-story Financial District condo, will be able to reserve one of three Hinckley yachts up to three times a week, with staff included, at no additional cost to the owner beyond docking and fuel. Celebrity broker Fredrik Eklund called it the “ultimate luxury,” and we’re inclined to agree.
Austin Nichols House
Morris Admji’s warehouse-to-condo conversion in Williamsburg is something like a playground for adults. Located at 184 Kent Avenue, the Austin Nichols House offers a catering kitchen, waterfront fitness center designed for “serious workouts” (on-site SoulCycle is available), co-working spaces, a movie theater, and much more. But the ultimate amenity within its confines is undoubtedly the “jam room,” a recording studio for the building’s musically inclined residents.
Stroller valet service is nothing new; the Park Slope YMCA was offering it back in 2008. Fast forward to 2016 and the Tetris style mid-rise in Park Slope, designed by ODA New York, touts stroller valet as one of its ritzy amenities. If that’s not enough, there is also an exclusive pet grooming station. Now all that’s missing is stroller tire repair and complimentary dog walking services.
Robert A.M. Stern’s luxe Tribeca condo hasn’t been super forthcoming on details. But as they slowly started to leak out, it was revealed that the future home of Patriots quarterback Tom Brady and supermodel Gisele Bündchen would have some swanky amenities to go along with their über-expensive condo. The upper echelon of society will be privy to a full-sized squash court and private wine room for residents.
Urban community building isn’t taken lightly at this expansive Staten Island rental development. Just take a look at the amenities offered as proof: There is a 5,000-square-foot urban farm, apiary, water jug refilling stations, a “bodega” where the farm’s fresh produce is peddled, and free cooking classes with the chef-in-residence. How nice.
15 Hudson Yards
When sales launched at this highly anticipated residential building within the Hudson Yards megaproject, it was revealed that condo prices would start around $2 million. And as far as amenities go, a standard pool wouldn’t do; 15 Hudson Yards residents will have access to an Aquatics Center on the 50th floor, which comes with a 75-foot three-lane swimming pool, a pool shower, and a whirlpool. And if that’s not enough, other amenities include a private spa and yoga studio, a 3,500-square-foot fitness center, sound-proof screening and performance room that can seat up to 24 people, a golf lounge with a simulator, and the list goes on.
21 West End Avenue
The Riverside Center megaproject is slowly becoming a reality and this 616-unit rental tower, designed by SLCE Architects, is gearing up to deliver some major perks. The most noteworthy one is for the kids: a children’s playroom with a life-size climbable dinosaur. There’s also an indoor dog run, an arcade with vintage video games, a wine tasting room, and more, all designed by ICRAVE.
What was once a Salvation Army shelter is now home to just five pricey Selldorf Architects-designed condos, with pricing beginning at the $6.5 million mark. The very exclusive condos will come with a private entry on 3rd Street through a "landscaped mews" lined with seasonal greenery, including magnolias and evergreen shrubs.
The Parking Club
Okay so this isn’t attached to a particular building or developer, but it’s outlandish enough on its very own accord to warrant a spot on the list. Based out of a Cobble Hill garage at 185 Pacific Street, The Parking Club offers spot ownership starting at $185,000, and includes on-demand service where valets materialize to deliver or whisk a car away. The valet service also includes fill-ups, charging for electric cars, car washes, monthly car maintenance, and yearly inspections. Yeah…
